    Trekking or horseback riding to the Lagoon

Description:

At the point where the Andes divide into three mountain ranges (Cordilleras), in the kingdom of the Frailejones, the lagoon of the Magdalena is located, the source of Colombia’s most important river. In earlier times, it was the main transportation route, as the water-rich Magdalena passes through the entire national territory over a distance of 1540 km and ends in the Caribbean Sea. The lagoon is situated at an altitude of 3327 m at the southern end of the National Park Puracé, between the departments Huila and Cauca

Day 1: San Agustín – Quinchana – San Antonio

Start at 7 am, with public transport (Chiva) to QUINCHANA where the horseback ride or trekking begins. We´ll go along a walkway through woods, rivers and mountains until after ca. 5 hours we reach SAN ANTONIO, where we´ll have the first overnight in a country house. We´ll have dinner, get warm and rest until the next day.

Day 2: San Antonio – Laguna de la Magdalena - Loyola

After breakfast, we will go from 2200m to 3300m until the Paramo, which borders the river Magdalena. We continue through the Paramo until the lagoon of the river Magdalena. Lunch will be a sandwich. Before late afternoon we will reach LOYOLA, where we will spent our second overnight in a country house. We will have dinner there and rest until we will leave early the next day.

Day 3: Loyola – Laguna Santiago – San Antonio

After breakfast, we will take the same way back over the Paramo, passing the lagoon of SANTIAGO and reaching SAN ANTONIO in the late afternoon. We´ll spent the night in the same house as the first night.

Day 4: San Antonio – Quinchana – San Agustín

We will get up early and leave SAN ANTONIO towars QUINCHANA where we´ll take the public transport again to go back to SAN AGUSTIN.

Recommendations:

  • Be in a good physical state

  • Wear waterproof clothing, socks and change of clothing.

  • Good trekking shoes or waterproof shoes.

  • Don´t bring to much luggage. If necessary, the luggage can be left at the hotel in San Agustin.

  • Bring your identification documents, health insurance and whatever else you consider necessary, always at hand.

  • If you are taking medication, are in medical treatment or have any allergy, please bring your medication and inform us with anticipation. Also, inform us if you are on a certain diet to make the corresponding changes during the trip

  • Avoid carrying recorders, sprays, insecticides or similar

  • In the event of something unforeseen, please contact as soon as possible with official reserves, parks or hotels visited.

  • Do not forget you can cause an accident, please comply with safety standards and recommendations established.

  • Don´t leave any trash in the park areas, reservations or visited places. Bring them back to the city and leave them at its adequate place.

  • Don´t take animals, plants or minerals out of the visited areas.

  • Follow the warnings and recommendations of the Ministry of Environment by visiting natural areas.

  • If traveling to an ecosystem: wear comfortable luggage pre-packed in plastic bags to protect from moisture; it is important to wear warm clothing cotton jacket, pants and long sleeves, hat, raincoat, flashlight, energy foods such as sugar cane, peanuts, chocolates, among others; rubber boots, camera, tennis or walking shoes and sunscreen
